HETAC Outstanding Teacher of the Year

Through individual nominations, exemplary teachers are selected to be honored by their colleagues and HETAC. The award is presented at the annual Leadership and Management Conference. These educators have demonstrated commitment to Home Economics Careers and Technology as a discipline, to their schools as visionary leaders, and to their students as exceptional role models. They represent and reflect the best of our profession in the classroom, at school, and within the communities they serve.

The HETAC Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award is our most prestigious award. It is given to a teacher who actively promotes interest and pride in our profession. Outstanding Teacher of the Year Application

This award is given annually to recognize a teacher who actively promotes interest and pride in Home Economics Careers and Technology.  This year’s recipient has commitment, persistence, and passion to further the work of Home Economics education throughout the State of California. She is truly loved by all.

Our recipient is deserving of this award as she has been a Home Economics teacher by choice, not by chance.  The HETAC 2016 Outstanding Teacher of the Year from Sultana High School in Region __ is ______________!



Dream, Dare, Do Award

This award recognizes and honors Home Economics Careers and Technology teachers who make an extra effort to enhance their local programs with innovative projects and techniques. Numerous outstanding instructors and FHA-HERO advisors continue to be selected as “going the extra mile” to practice and act on great dreams and ideas. Dream Dare Do Application


This year’s 2015 Dream, Dare, Do Award was presented to ________ of _________ High School at the Leadership and Management Conference in Anahiem, CA.  This award goes to teachers who have developed innovative ideas, units of study, or other activities related to teaching or promotion of HECT courses.

______________ is described as a Developer, Supporter, and Contributor to the HECT department in her high school.

New Professional Award

This award recognizes a current HETAC member with less than 5 years of classroom experience teaching Home Economics Careers and Technology in a secondary school or in an ROCP funded program. The winner will be selected based on their involvement and contributions to the field. This award is presented annually at Leadership and Management; the winner must be present. New Professional Award Application

FHA-HERO Honor Chapter Awards

HETAC recognizes FHA-HERO chapters in California that successfully complete the Honor Chapter application and qualify for this award. The award epitomizes a chapter of active members with strong leadership characteristics. Personalized plaques are awarded to each California FHA-HERO Honor Chapter at the annual California FHA-HERO Leadership Conference. Application is found in the FHA-HERO Chapter Guide as well as in the fall mailing.

Home Economics Teacher Scholarship

Annually, HETAC awards a scholarship to an outstanding FHA-HERO member who intends to pursue a career in teaching Home Economics Careers and Technology. Winners are selected based on their leadership experience, commitment, academic achievement, and recommendations of their teachers and school staff. Application is available in the FHA-HERO fall mailing or from your regional supervisor.

Rose DeBenedetti Home Economics Teachers Association of California Scholarship

This scholarship is presented in memory of our former FHA-HERO State Advisor Mrs. Janice DeBenedetti- Smiths mother. An active FHA-HERO member is selected based on their plans to major or train in a Home Economics Careers and Technology related field. They must have shown leadership and service at the state, region, or at chapter levels.The student must also make personal contributions to the home,school, and community.

FHA-HERO State Leadership Meeting

HETAC also sponsors the Hospitality Room at the State Leadership Meeting where advisors are inspired to improve their chapter. HETAC awards $100 to the first place finishers of the following competitive recognition events: Jr. and Sr. Child Development and Teaching Careers.


Kathryn Whitten Scholarship

Mrs. Kathryn P. Whitten passed away after a short illness on January 8, 2010. Mrs. Whitten had served as a Regional Supervisor of Home Economics Careers and Technology (HECT) and FHA-HERO Advisor for Regions 5, 6, 8, and 9. She will be remembered for her work with schools in her assigned regions and statewide responsibilities in professional and curriculum development for Home Economics Careers and Technology as well as with FHA-HERO.

During her 57 year career in education, she served as a HECT teacher, FHA-HERO Chapter and Region Advisor, and State Department of Education HECT consultant.

A scholarship has been established in her honor for the professional development of current and future teachers and FHA-HERO advisors.

The Teacher Credentialing Scholarship

HETAC desires to promote the Home Economics Careers and Technology profession by offering a scholarship to a deserving student entering or currently enrolled in a teacher credentialing program.   The applicant must have the intent of pursuing a career as a Home Economics teacher at the secondary level.  This $500 scholarship will be awarded at the annual HECT Leadership and Management Conference.  Scholarship requirements are as follows:

  • The applicant must have a degree in a Home Economics field.
  • Have a scholastic average of at least a B (3.0).
  • Be a current member of HETAC.

Enrollment will need to be verified at a credentialing program.
